Travel & Sex

I recently jumped across the pond to see a dear friend and her family in Utrecht—a quaint, bustling town 40 minutes outside Amsterdam. I was struck by the inclusive, laissez-faire vibe related to sexuality.

The Netherlands is renowned for its open and liberal attitudes towards sex and sexuality, which stand in stark contrast to more conservative views found in other parts of the world—even within other EU countries. This progressive stance is supported by several key factors that contribute to a healthy and informed approach to these topics.

Comprehensive Sex Education

Dutch schools offer comprehensive sex education starting from an early age. This education covers a wide range of topics including consent, sexual health, and relationships, helping to foster a well-rounded and informed perspective on sex and sexuality. Information is power and knowing about our bodies and options for healthy and satisfying sex from an early age makes all the difference.

Legal and Regulated Prostitution

In the Netherlands, prostitution is legal and regulated. This approach aims to protect the rights and safety of sex workers, treating it as a profession rather than a moral issue. The regulation ensures better working conditions and legal protection for those involved in the industry.

Acceptance of LGBTQ+ Rights

The Netherlands is a trailblazer in LGBTQ+ rights, being the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. Strong legal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity reflect the country’s commitment to equality and acceptance. Queer identities are not used as political pawns like we do in the US. Rather, LGBTQ+ are seen as a normal variation on the norm. What a concept!

Access to Contraceptives and Healthcare

There is widespread access to contraceptives and sexual healthcare in the Netherlands. This accessibility supports informed and safe sexual practices, with comprehensive services available through the Dutch healthcare system.

Tolerance and Pragmatism

Dutch society values tolerance and pragmatism over moralizing. This practical approach influences various aspects of life, including attitudes towards sex and sexuality, promoting a culture of acceptance and reason. Sex and sexuality are less taboo subjects in Dutch society. Open discussion in the media and in personal conversations helps normalize these topics and promotes a healthier understanding.

Cultural Representation

Dutch art and culture frequently explore themes of sexuality openly, which both reflects and reinforces the liberal attitudes prevalent in society.

Overall, the Netherlands’ progressive attitudes towards sex and sexuality emphasize education, safety, and individual rights. This approach not only fosters a healthier society but also sets an example of how pragmatic policies can lead to more informed and accepting communities.
